Maiden, Mother, Queen & Crone. Squire, Sire, King & Sage. These stages are guideposts that can benefit those who experience them physically, and those who flow between them. People in our western society suffer from a Peter Pan syndrome that has not been at all beneficial to our evolution. We spend billions each year on cosmetics and surgical anti-aging treatments. Not only are we refusing to grow old but, we are refusing to grow up. We don’t know how. I think the lack of rites of passage in our lives is partially responsible for this. Humans go through stages. Birth, puberty, graduation, marriage-partnership, mother-fatherhood, career building, retirement, and death. These stages can be applied physically, spiritually and psychologically. Each stage contains all those stages microcosmically within them. Failing to mark some of these more significant events in an intentional way can cause confusion, a sense of being lost, and sometimes psychological trauma.
