We know the bright music of his laughter, the warmth of his ruddy cheeks, the red-and-white outfit that has crossed borders, generations, and winter nights to delight the young and the young at heart. But where did Santa’s story truly take root—and why has this figure of kindness and generosity enchanted the world so gently for so long? Inspired by my childhood game “And What Happened Before That,” this journey travels backward from 2026 through department-store wonderlands, the legend of St. Nicholas, Nordic myths and folktales, the snow covered pines of the vast Russian steppes, and, at last, to the Sami reindeer herders whose ancient lives echo beneath the snow. Come trace the path of a beloved icon and bring his history to life, until the magic of the December holidays warms your heart and hearth again.
